week 32: Which ball will you let go? Glass ball versus rubber ball
eventually, you can't do it all and have to learn to prioritize
one of the earliest lesson of building a business and leadership is knowing how to prioritize.
an easy way to think about is simply knowing the difference between glass ball versus rubber ball.
now here’s the trick, you can have any number of rubber balls but only one glass ball at any given time.
the point is, the rubber ball when it drops, it will bounce a few times but you can still catch it up
now if you drop the glass ball, it’s finished.
you can’t recover from that.
that’s the whole game.
on a personal note, i am learning to to balance like all of us.
not a single day is same.
last week, my each day was longer than and i was getting a little off with timezones.
i would work early with one of our teammates in India and late because we have another on the west coast and the sales calls could be at any time.
in between, i gotta do some work too so my days and evenings started to blur.
my wife said, let’s cook together and i had a bunch of work to do.
well - i knew that was a glass ball moment.
so i stopped working, did the cooking and then got back to work.
Leaderpoint: in life and business we have to know which ball is a glass ball and never lose the sight of it.
what’s your glass ball?
Sangram - thanks for your holistic, human voice in a potentially inhuman B2B environment. I value what you're doing with your distinctive personal brand. Sorry I missed you when you were out in SF but I'm in Atlanta between Christmas and New Years... I suspect you're somewhere else with family, but I've learned to ask crazy questions nonetheless... just checking in case you are up for meeting briefly in person (and as persons!)...
I like to throw in the tennis ball. It's the one that is balancing in kids and their activities. It's a whole different ballgame than a spouse/partner.
