week 69: not by default but by design
nothing happens by accident that worthy of long term success
thank you to over 11,000 of you who read this weekly and share with your friends and family for behind the scenes on building a million dollar business from scratch and beyond.
i also include a personal note in the end so i am grateful that you let me do that without judgement.
the part that keeps me going more than anything seems to be momentum.
for example, even if you have runway (money in the bank for the payroll) for a year, if momentum is not there in sales and customer interactions, it feels a bit empty and hard.
what’s interesting about that observation is momentum does not happen by default.
you need to manufacture it or the way I like to think, design it.
for example:
- when deals were not happening, we created an artificial forcing function that required people to make decisions to either buy now or miss out.
- when there was interest but no budget in quarter, we opened up and let them pay next year as long as contract is signed.
- when summer was quite for most companies, we executed on a buzz month with all our customers, partners, and ambassadors to share the work we are doing that drove inbound conversations.
- almost 90% of the deals we have won has a forcing function of date, weekly meetings with action items and flex pricing structure that is hard to say no to.
the point is, nothing we do is by accident or default.
tt’s a series of intentional incremental steps, that leads to a monumental outcome.
God has given us the ability to design and put new things in action instead of waiting for things to happen by default or by chance.
on a personal note, our little daughter (who is just 8 years old) asked a question during our Bible study
why do bad things happen to good people?
that’s a profound question and one that I don’t think one could answer without the account of Genesis when the fall of mankind let to the rebellion against God.
a perfect world doesn’t exist today and just like love cannot be forced, a good and loving God cannot force His will on us.
He has given us free will and we all know free will also leads to bad consequences.
because of which we have a fallen world that has natural disasters, diseases, war, human heart’s evil all the way to death.
i don’t think i was successful in answering her completely but it is the beginning of deeper conversations.
i want our kids to ask tough questions so we can have discourse and even healthy disagreements.
we just didn’t pop into existence by default or random process.
we are here for a purpose that God reveals to us as we follow His will and not ours.
it’s His design that we get to operate and the more I think about it, the more I am in awe of our awesome Creator.
Leaderpoint: think design not default to create momentum.
You’re one of the best I’ve seen at creating momentum, Sangram. There’s also a book by my other mentor, Mark Schaefer called ‘Cumulative Advantage’ that digs into the art and science of momentum. It’s so important. Thanks for sharing your thoughts again this week.
yep, dont give a reason to say no!
